here is a lot of skill and practise that moulds an individual into a great auctioneer and the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers Novice Auctioneer of the Year Competition aims to educate, as well as highlight, future talent.

The NAVA Auctioneer of the Year Competition is designed to test and challenge novice auctioneers in a simulated auction room whilst providing a fun and entertaining environment for everyone involved. This year’s event will be held at the Stratford Manor, Warwickshire on 25 September.

Gary Harper, President of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers, said:

“This year the competition is set to be even more exciting, with lots of skills to be learnt and lots of laughs to be had; it’s going to be one to remember.  The competition is designed not only to be fun, but to test the skills and abilities of the young auctioneers. It won’t be easy, as in real life, bidders can sometimes catch you off guard or be a pain to manage.”

With this in mind we’ve asked celebrity valuer Lennox Cato, a member of NAVA, to offer some advice on how to become a successful auctioneer:

Know who’s in the room

Auctions will always attract a wide range of people from the first timers to the professionals.  As such, there will be a lot of psychology and theatre in the room.  Make sure you know where everyone is, sometimes those hiding behind obstructions can be big players.

Be familiar with your audience

You must smile and engage with your audience.  Don’t just read from the sheet in front of you, look up and look out at the audience.  Talk to people all around the room and be clear, try not to mumble.  This is vital to show you are in control of the room, doing this correctly will make bidders relaxed and more likely to bid, creating an event that is both pleasant and enjoyable.

Do your homework

Provide your audience with as much information about the lot as possible.  Doing so instils credibility in the item you are selling.  You should also research the type of people interested in your lots and proactively invite them along.  This will ensure you get the right mix of people bidding for the lot, driving the price above and beyond the estimate.

Don’t get lost in the moment

You must remain professional at all times.  Remember that you are selling other people’s items.  Sometimes with high profile lots, the atmosphere changes quickly; stay alert and know your parameters.

Enjoy it

Enjoy the experience but don’t get carried away with euphoria.  Always stand by your decision and move on.  Reversing decisions causes uncertainty amongst bidders and they will lose confidence in your ability as an auctioneer.
